Hi, I’m Susan Soehnchen! I have a deep passion for travel, culture, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds—qualities that make me a dedicated and enthusiastic ESL teacher. My love for language began in childhood, inspired by my mother, who was a reading teacher. She instilled in me an appreciation for words, which later shaped my career path. In 2004, I joined Teach for America, an organization that places recent college graduates in low-income school districts. As a classroom teacher in Houston, Texas, I worked with many bilingual students, creating engaging lessons to strengthen their English skills. In 2013, I met my husband, Christoph, an expat working for a German automotive supplier. The following year, I became CELTA-certified and moved to Germany, where I spent nearly a decade teaching English to individuals and groups, both in-person and online. During this time, I also provided online English lessons via VIPKid to young Chinese learners. Living abroad gave me firsthand experience in adapting to a new culture—navigating daily life, building friendships, and finding a sense of belonging. Now back in Michigan, I’m excited to help students in the Detroit and Ann Arbor area improve their English and gain confidence in their language skills. Whether you're adjusting to life in a new country or refining your business English, I look forward to supporting you on your journey!
